Welcome to the Lair

The old log camp was really starting to take shape. The well was drilled and cleared out and providing water. There was plenty of food and provisions as well as a hefty supply of firewood. Good lumber would be needed for the building projects the group had in mind.

They decided to head up northward to the quarry under the guise of collecting mushrooms. Overnight camping, all was quiet and no traps were sprung. Setting out the next morning, there was freshly fallen snow. It took about an hour to get nearer the mushroom grove when they started seeing spider webs in the trees. A hint of motion had Yan shooting a hastily grabbed arrow and with a squeal and a flop, a lone spider fell to its death.

The group could see that the webbing in the trees extended to the ground level in some spots. Despite this, Branek decided to light a torch and start the webs on fire. They lit like a fuse and the flames spread quickly. As the fire spread a high pitched woman’s shriek could be heard off in the distance.

Suddenly four spiders appeared, ready to fight. Quite a fight it was! But the group defeated them and kept moving northward. The webs became thicker. Branek decided to burn more webs and the leaves on the ground began to stir, with 3 more spiders appearing! This battle ended with Branek and Owain getting bitten. Owain became quite ill but more and more spiders just kept appearing, flushed out by the careless lighting of the webs. By the time the group finally made it to the Quarry, they had killed 14 spiders, with some others having fled away.

The basin of the quarry was covered in tattered old dresses and broken slabs of stone, and a cold fog settled in around their feet. They heard a strange whisper and figured they’d found the lair of the spider Queen, Bedwyr. They tried luring her out by reciting the rhyme they’d heard about her. Nothing seemed to happen so they went inside the lowest of the three cave entrances to find themselves surrounded by the stench of death.

After lighting an appropriate number of torches, they entered. There were thick spider webs everywhere. An open room they came to was filled with the skeletons and carcasses of deer, goats, and people! They found what appeared to be some Dwarven weapons and armor. They picked their way through the garbage and saw a raised walkway going around the room in an L shape. They climbed outside and re-entered through the third cave entrance.

This dark room had a curtain or tarp covering an entrance, which they carefully pulled back with a spear tip. They found a passageway going straight up, with a cold draft. Bronwen shot a flaming arrow up it but it just came right back down.

Suddenly a blackish brown spider the size of a CAR appeared in front of Cad. It had a hideous distorted female face. She grabbed hold of Murf and disappeared, vanishing into thin air with him, cackling madly.
