The McHack on DriveThruRPG

I am very pleased to announce that The McHack – Rules Tome is now available for purchase on DriveThuRPG for the princely sum of $2.00! You can find it here:

This is my first ever publication, and I am very excited to put this little book into the world. There are so many wonderful old school games out there, with much higher production quality (I literally created it using Word on an iPad – talk about tough going), but I am proud of these rules. They are simple, slick, and they play very well at the table (you can even follow along on this blog as my in-person group continues to play-test in my own campaign setting of Ogdar’s Reach).

The McHack includes a few new (or reimagined) classes and species, including the Explorer (a generic human class that can morph into any of the other classes when their Ability Scores allow), the Wildman (what happens when the ancestors of humans linger in a world that has already passed them by), and the druidic, mute, telepathic orcs known as Bakku. I’m particularly proud of the latter, I think there is a lot of interesting play to be had with these guys!

In addition to the new classes, the 1d12 system used for all Saving Throws and Tasks is also really helpful for referees who like to keep game mechanics simple at the table. I created this because, while I love intricate table (they make the number-cruncher in me very happy), I don’t find them useful at the table. This simple system helps me deal with a thousand little situations in a concise way that leads to game-able outcomes. While you might think this over-simplification could get dull, my players love it. The game flows at a good pace, and uncertain situations have relevant, interesting outcomes.

While there is no Monster Manual just yet (I’m working on that right now, and it includes some fun treasure type tables), I have included a quick and easy reference for “McHacking” B/X stats (it’s really very easy). Watch out for this second book, and some simple published adventures, to be available soon.

Please do check out The McHack if you like simple systems, want some new ideas, or just like supporting the idiotic creations of other weirdos.

Cheers!

Mog.
